We are so excited to be able to learn from you, and for you to be able to learn from us.
UMag students: Please write a letter to the students in Illinois. Introduce yourself and ask them some of the things you would like to know from their life in the US.
Churchville Students: Please read our letters and tell us about yourselves. Ask us some questions too! All the Chileans are going to be English teachers and they are university students so you can ask them about Chile, school, life, whatever!
Hi, my name is Karina and I was born in Punta Arenas, and I plan to live here for a long time. My city is pretty calm, there are few places to go out in the afternoons, but they aren't boring at all.
ReplyDeleteWhat do you do for fun in a normal day? I would love to stay in touch with you and learn many things about your life.
Bye
Hi I'm Pablo

ReplyDeleteNow we are in autumn, however the weather is very cold it seem to me that we are going to have a very cold winter.
I hope to know more about you,and your environment, you likes , dislikes, and the funny things that we can do in your country.

Hello!
ReplyDeleteI’m Andrea Torres. I live in Punta Arenas, a Southern city from Chile. I’m a 23-year-old girl, who is studying to become a teacher of English at Universidad de Magallanes.
I am not from Punta Arenas, all my family live in another part of the country called Chiloe (It’s an Island Located at the North of Punta Arenas). I really hate the weather in Punta Arenas; it’s too cold and “Windy” even in summer! Sadly, I have a cold :-(.
What I like the most about Punta Arenas are my friends, my career and the beautiful landscape. There is a national park called Torres del Paine. It is wonderful for tourists to visit because you really feel in contact with the surrounding nature.
But not everything is studies :-)! I do several things related to sports. I love all kind of sports - in my spare time I go jogging and practice body combat (a sort of mixture of Martial Arts). These activities help me a lot, especially to relax and forget studies for a while.
Sorry if I’m boring you, but writing letters “is not my cup of tea”, even though I like to be in contact with pen friends :-). Now, tell me about yourself. How old are you? What kind of things do you like to do, and why? Do you have any Hobbies? Tell me about your city and its weather. Its customs and everything - I’m eager to know about you.
Well I hope to hear from you soon! I’ll be waiting for your letter.
Hi!!! My name is Fabian. This is my fifth year in the university but actually I'm in my fourth year because I have failed in some subjects but the important thing is to be persistent if you enjoy what are you doing. I'm taking the Miss Stephen`s class too.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoy to spend my free time playing on line, actually I`m playing Call OF Duty 5.
Well I would like to know what kind do you do in your free time, maybe some of you play on line, if you do we could play together.
I'll be waiting you answers.
Bye.
Hi!!! dear new friends!!! I'm Lizette, I'm 26 and I'm really happy we have the opportunity to know more about each other.
ReplyDeleteWell... I live in Punta Arenas, too. I was born here and I really love my city. We are somehow isolated from the rest of the country and it is a bit difficult and expensive to travel somewhere else. People here tend to wear dark colours (maybe because of the cold weather) and we all are used to the strong winds. What I like the most about Punta Arenas is that it is a quiet place to live (compared to other cities like Santiago, the capital of Chile), and that there are many attractive places nearby where you can enjoy the beauties of nature.
So, I would like to ask you... what do you like the most about your city?
Ok... that’s all ... Thanks and b-bye!
Hello!!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Paola, I’m studying for being an English teacher at University of Magallanes.
I live in Punta Arenas Chile, this city is located in the south of chile, in South America , it is very cold, here the majority of the year is cold but it doesn’t matter because it is a wonderful city with many places where you can go and share with the nature, some of them are: Fuerte Bulnes, Torres del Paine and Pinguineras.
I personally enjoy dancing our national dance, that is called Cueca, I have been practicing it for 3 years and I use it as a therapy of relaxing.
I would like to know about your city and your customs
Chao (bye)
Hello, my name is Elizabeth, I'm a 22-year-old student. I chose this carreer because my pasion is to theach little children and also because of the language (which is really important in this region for the turism).
ReplyDeleteMy biggest hobbie is to travel to different places specially inside of my region which is wonderful, and if you have the proper car and supplies you can go some marvellous places that do not appear in any map!!!
I would like to know what part of your city do you like the most? And if there is any special place that you can only see by going there.
bye...
Hey! It’s nice to be talking to you. My name’s David, I’m in junior college, studying to be an English teacher. I live all the way down, at the bottom of the world in a place called Punta Arenas, in the Chilean Patagonia, near Antarctica. Yeah! I know you may think that I’m chilling out in here, actually it’s pretty cold, but not as you think it is; temperatures go from 3 degrees Celsius below 0 in winter, up to 15 or 16 degrees Celsius above 0 during summer time. However, with this whole global warming thing going on, this summer we had like 3 or four days with the highest temperatures ever, there were 25 degrees Celsius app., and believe me I was roasting like a chicken; no one here is used to those temperatures, though I like warmer days than colder ones. Anyway, as I said before I’m studying at college, it’s called Universidad de Magallanes, and I guess you can infer the meaning of Universidad which pretty much resembles in spelling to its English equivalent: University.
ReplyDeleteI know we are living entirely different realities, cultural ones especially. Here for instance, men shake hands or a hug when the first meet, instead, when men first meet a woman, they kiss their cheek once; the same happens when women meet women either they hug or kiss. How do people behave when they first meet in your country?
Another thing I forgot to tell you about me is that I live with my parents and my sister, because the College I’m attending to is inside the city, so there’s no need to move. I have my own room and my TV with Cable, so I watch lots of shows like: Lost, Grey’s Anatomy, Gossip Girl, True Blood, The Tudors, and from time to time Dexter.
A year ago, I got to save enough money to buy a laptop, and I’m writing you this post from it (LOL). So you can see that people here is not that different from you guys, though I don’t think you’re watching the Tudors or True Blood, that’s something just Adults watch.
Why don’t you tell me about your room, what things you have inside, what things you watch on TV, if you share your room tell me with who (When I was a kiddo I used to share my room with my little sister, now she and I have our own bedroom, Thank God!). I don’t know you tell me.
Hope you understand all things I said, anything you want to know that you did not understand, ask me, and if you have any question you want to ask just ask it.
Talk to you soon
Hey! It is pleasure to have contact with you guys. Im a student from Punta Arenas. One of the southest cities of the world. It is quite cold, but crissa has told us that your winters are worse =/.
ReplyDeleteWell, Im looking forward to know more about you, your city, costumes etc. Im a student from Magellan`s university (Umag)and Im studying for becoming a teacher of English as my classmates have explained prevoiusly.
I`ve been living here for 12 years. Previusly, I lived in Puerto Natales, a city 200 kilometers from Punta Arenas going to the north. As you have noticed chile is a very long country with variety of climates, costumes and beliefs.
You may have a lot of questions about this place, I`ll answer you any question, it doesn`t matter if you think is an obvious one. For example: we don`t have pinguins as pets XD....
I hope I`ll hear news from you as soon as possible, I would like to learn more about you and your English.
Hoping to have a chat soon, is Sebastian Lannoy Moya Olmedo.
Hi!!!I'm Carolina, I'm twenty-three years old and I'm studying to become a teacher of English. There are many things I can tell you about my city (Punta Arenas). It's located in the south of Chile and sometimes It's called the end of the world, there is too much cold here but we are used to, we wear warm clothes all the year...
ReplyDeletePunta Arenas has many beautiful places to visit, specially closer to nature, our city is colored by trees and the clear sky is one of its most amazing characteristics.
Young people like to go out at night, we start the parties at home with some friends and then we go to dance, we listen to all kinds of music and there,What kind of music do you like?
I would like to be in contact with you and if you may tell us some interesting things of your city...
I hope to hear from you soon...Chauuuu!!!!!
Hello there! I'm Mario and I'm studying to become an English teacher, just like the rest of the people that have posted here, we are all classmates.
ReplyDeleteAs you know already, We live in a city called Punta Arenas which is also my hometown, that is the reason why I love it so much and I hope to live here the rest of my life. What is curious about my city is the weather because it's very changeable, for example we can have a beautiful sunny day and in the blink of an eye it starts raining or snowing!
I would like you to tell me about your city, how many people live in there, customs, etc. I would also love to know about you too, I think you have a lot of interesting things to tell me about.
Finally, if you want to know a little bit more about me or my city don't be afraid of asking, it would be definately a great experience.
Thanks for reading and I hope to be in contact with you guys very soon.
Bye
Hi guys! How are you? I'm Vanessa and I'm 21 (I celebrated my birthay just a few days ago => ) As you have probably read I'm a 4th year student at Universidad de Magallanes in Punta Arenas. If you look up for my city in a map you'll see how far away we are!
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I've seen most of my mates have already told you lots of things about our city. I guess it's really different tou your hometown! It would be really interesting if you could tell us about your daily lives there. Something very interesting and strange about Punta Arenas is that in winter we only have like 7 or 8 hours of light! The sun rises at 10am and it goes down at 4pm so it's pretty weird to do all your stuff in the middle of a constant darkness, but we are kind of used to it.
If you have any questions feel free to ask! I hope you're enjoying school =)
Hope to read about you soon! C'yaa!
Hi!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Etien, I am a 21-year old girl. I am from a wonderful city situated at the end of the world, Punta Arenas. It is on the southern part of Chile, in South America. I love my city, even though the climate is very changeable and some people doesn't like it because it is very cold and windy, I love it, especially when it snows.
Last summer I worked with tourists (specifically in "Torres del Paine National Park") and most of the visitors were amazed by the landscape, I believe that it is pretty unique. They told me that there are few parts in the world in which you can enjoy of places were the sky looks so blue and the air is so pure, it is very peaceful, some times even melancholic.
As you know am studying to be a teacher of English, so I am really interested in education and in your language. It would be wanderful if could let me and my classmates know about how your classes are, how are your teachers? What subjects or activities do you like? Why?
Besides studying I dedicate time to my friends, I like going out and chatting with them. I also enjoy drawing and painting, I think that those hobbies are very relaxing. I could say that those are my favorite leisure activities along with listening to music. I prefer listening to rock, but I like music of all kind. What about you? What is your favorite kind of music?? What do you like to do in your free time?
Is there anything you'd like to know about Punta Arenas or Chile?
I hope to hear from you very soon.
:D
Bye ^^
Hi there! How are things? I hope you are fine.
ReplyDeleteMy name is Tania, and just like all the previous posts, I'm a English Teaching student. I'm 21 years old, and this is my fourth year at the UMag (University of Magallanes.)
I have lived here in Punta Arenas since I was born, so I know quite well the city (it is a pocket-sized city in comparison with the rest of Chile, you know). Among the places you can visit there are museums, restaurants, and shopping centers, without leaving aside the attractive buildings constructed on the 19th Century. On the summer, there are two penguin colonies available, which are really beautiful.
One thing that tourists are afraid of is the weather! Yes, believe me, it's because, as my classmate said, is REALLY changeable, imagine yourself having sunshine, snow, wind, and rain (while the leaves of the trees are turning yellow) in just one day! So, you are never sure about what to wear (perhaps a good piece of advice could be keeping a sweater on your bag, who knows?)
Anyway, I want to know about you guys! I'm doing my teaching practice with children with the same age as you (12 to 14 years old), so it would be interesting to know about your hobbies, likes, dislikes, goals for the future, so that I can tell you whether or not there are some similarities. Another thing I would like to know is if you have Spanish or another foreign language classes, and how they are (funny, boring, everything that comes up to your mind.) I'm asking this because in the United States Spanish is a foreign language just like English is here, so maybe we could share our experiences regarding learning another language.
That's all, don't forget to write back to us! We are looking forward to reading you.
Best wishes,
Bye bye.
Hello everyone! how you doing?
ReplyDeleteLet me introduce myself.
My name is Valentina Amigo, a 20-year-old girl, and as I think you already noticed, we are all classmates, so I'm also studying to become an English teacher. I started my practice just a few days ago, in a 7th grade of a catholic school, so if you want to know something about the school or our classes, I'll be glad to answer any of your questions.
I have always lived in Punta Arenas, and as many people say, we live "in the end of the world" (or the beginning). As I could see, there are many posts referring to Punta Arenas, but I would like to know about your town, I was told your winter is extremely cold! :O
I would really like to know how is your school how are your classes, your classmates, teachers, etc. That way we can have a different view from what it is going on here. Besides, our cultures must be very different and it is always interesting to share this kind of things. And not only that, I would also like to know what kind of things would you like to do in your school or how do you think a teacher should be? I would like to know so many things! haha and if you want to know something, I'll be glad to answer any of your questions.
And some information about me... I love music, art, movies, literature and everything that has to do with some kind of art. I also love animals ( I have a beautiful samoyed dog called Nanuk) and I'm the elder of my brothers and cousins, so I'm used to talk or be surrounded by younger people.
I hope to get in contact with you soon
Take care and thanks for reading!!
=D
Hi!!
ReplyDeleteMy name is vanessa, I`m twenty-one years old and I`m also studying to become an English teacher I`m in fourth year at Universidad de Magallanes.
living in Punta Arenas is quite exciting there are different touristic places that can visit. The most famous is the Torres del Paine national park with beautiful landscapes and its spectacular flora and fauna.
And the rest many of my classmates have already posted above.
I my freetime I really enjoy practising sports, specially volleyball and I spend a lot of time with my friends chatting and going out.
I would like to know about you what do like to do in your freetime? How's your school?, etc.

ReplyDeleteHi!
ReplyDeleteI'm Maria Jose and I'm late, I should have post yesterday but my pc is broken!!!
I'm 20 years old, I think one of the youngest in my class :P. I'm from Pta. Arenas I have always lived here and I'm not interested in leave this place 'cause I love it!
I like my career I like teaching and I have found during my practice that it's not that easy 'cause here student in general at school aren't intereste on learning English so it's a big challenge.
In my free time I like playing guitar hero! A few months ago my friends and I boght a guitar and I became adict to that game and now we're waiting for the drums!!!!! :)
In fact there isn't so much to do here that's why I play so much. The weather is very cold and almost 3 quarters of the year the sun sets very early in the afternoon, about 5 and it rises about 9 in the morning, besides in winter we have snow and frost everywhere so it becomes very difficult to walk in the streets. Even though we don't have penguins walking in the streets or in our yards if any of you think that!! I have found people in my own country from the north who thinks that!
I would like to know about your interests, maybe music, do you have any particular famous band from Illinois? or what sports are the commonest in your State or in your city?
Or anything you would like to share...
Waiting for your answer..
BYE
We are really excited to be corresponding with you. Crissa is a great friend of mine whom I miss. She was a wonderful teacher and coach here in the United States. I hope you are enjoying her teaching and learning a great deal from her. Sometime ask her about our trip to Chicago on the mini busses! My 8th grade students can hardly wait to begin blogging with all of you. We hope to post a video and pictures soon.

Hey Karina, my name is Bridget. I've lived in Elmhurst, Illinois all my life. In my free time here, I like to spend time with my friends. Elmhurst is a pretty busy town but there are parks and other places that you can relax at. I'm 13 years old and am in 8th grade at Churchville middle school.
ReplyDeleteIn my free time I like to go to movies with my friends, go out to eat, and just hang out at a friend's house. There is one movie theater in the center of our town and many restaurants everywhere. Do you ever go to movies or to eat with your friends?
At my school I play many sports. I play softball, basketball, track, and cross country. What kind of sports or activities do you like to do?
Elmhurst is a great, fun place just like your town. It was nice getting to know a little about your life, although I look forward to talking to you more. Thanks for writing. Talk to you soon, Byee!
Hi Joycelinee!
ReplyDeleteI'm Renata, and I live in Elmhurst, Illinois. You probably know that already, but in case you didn't, now you know. what might surprise you is that the climate here is almost like the climate in Puntas Arenas!! Our winter was very cold with lots of snow.We got 2 days off of school just because it was too cold to be outside, even to wait for the bus! So everyone was looking forward to spring. It's supposed to be spring now, but it's still cold and rainy. I don't like the weather here, but hopefully it will start to get better.
I like school (mostly) and in my free time I go on the computer and spend time with my friends. I dislike math. (which is an important part of school, but I still dislike it.) and some other things which are less important...
There are A LOT of funny people and things to do in the US! (There are plenty just in my English class! :P) I also like the little smileys! :)
Bye,
Renata
Hey Elizabeth!!
ReplyDeleteI'm Vicki and I'll be responding with you!
I'm 14th (waiting for 15 in november!)and I enjoy and participate in many different things, so feel free to ask me about anything!!
Anyway to rspond to your questions, places that I enjoy visiting in my town would probably be any parks. I enjoy being around nature, its just something different thant the usual town/city scene.
Now, places that I can only see by being here, well.....
I'm not sure if there really is any... I know, not that exciting.
But either way I bet that you'd find something here more interesting than I would. Just shows that we have our likes and our dislikes.
ANYWAY,I have a brother and a sister that are both older than me. My brother's in college and My sister is out of college and living in the state of Texas.
There is 13 years between me and my sister, and 6 between my brother and I. (I probably just used incorrect grammar. Oh well, I was never very good at it anyway! =)
My brother and I enjoy playing video games and the sort, plus we tend to read and watch the same books and T.V. shows. (I grew up around him, so I like the same things as him.)
So, Tell me about your family life and whatever else you think is important. Hope to hear from you soon.
Hi Carolina!! my name is Bonnie. Im so psyched to talk to you! Do you like living at the 'bottom of the world'? Do you see any penguins? What made you want to be an english teacher?
ReplyDeleteSo young people in Punta Arenas like to go out and dance and go to partys? What else to people do for fun? In elmhurst my friends and I like to go to the movies, starbucks, and hang out in people's basements and gossip :)
I like all types pof music... except rap! i'm really wierd in the idea that i love hard-core rock music and cute little girl pop music!! :D
In Illinois we have all 4 seasons; my favorite is summer! here tempuratures range from 75-90 degrees farenheight. and it's sunny most of time.
I'd love to come see Punta Arenas it sounds soooooo awsome!!!
can't wait to hear back from you!!
byeeee, Bonnie <3
Pablo- Hey! Your city sounds pretty awesome. I don't technically live in a city. I live in a town called Elmhurst, which is a suburb of Chicago. Chicago is the third largest city in the country. It's pretty cool, because for the 2016 Olympics, Chicago might get picked to be the city to host it, so we're all hoping for that. For fun, us kids typically go uptown, where there's a movie theater and some restaurants and stuff like that. What do you do for fun? I really enjoy my town, and I wish to live here for a long time. One of my most favorite hobbies is acting. I love being on stage and performing. However, I like doing many other things as well. What are your hobbies? I heard that your city (or town in your case) can get pretty cold. I can't believe how you can get by without a 70 degree summer (70 degrees fairenhieght). My class is in a thing called REACH, which is a class for kids like us that are gifted at school. Are you good at school? Also, what does your surroundings look like? We have green grass and a lot of trees, but considering that it's very cold where you are, I was curious if you had the same surroundings. Are you in any sports at your school? I'm in track and I was in cross country. I'm not very fast, but I know that excercise is a good thing, so I enjoy it anyway. Oh, by the way, I am 14 years old and go to Churchville Middle School. I hope that you are enjoying yourself and share some of your culture with me. Write back soon!
ReplyDeleteHi Maria Jose! My name is Lainie. As you know, I am from Elmhurt, Illinois, a suburd of Chicago. It is a great place to visit if you are planning on vacationing. Puntas Arenas seems very interesting. Would you recommend it for a vacation?
ReplyDeleteI'm 14 years old and am in 8th grade. Next year I am going to highschool and I am very excited. It is the beginning of spring right now and it has been rainy and chilly the past few days, but I am glad it is starting to get warmer. I can wait until summer where it will be 80 degrees!
I love guitar hero, too! Actually, I've only played a few times, so I'm not very good:) I think that the guitar is more fun to play than the drums, though.
Here, when it is warmer, I spend a lot of my time outside. I like to play soccer, run, go to the park, and go swimming. You should consider going somewhere where its nice out so you can spend your time outside. If I could, I would live somewhere where it is warm all year round, unlike here. Maybe Florida or Hawaii. But sometimes I like to go to the mountains in Colorado for skiing. Have you ever gone on vacation?
The sports commonly played here are baseball, basketball, a little soccer and a little hockey. I play volleyball, which isn't extremely common, but I love it!
I have to go to spanish class now=). I like spanish a lot and i am taking it in high school. ttyl
Lainie
Hi my name is Keely Resing,
ReplyDeleteI am responding to Valentina Amigo.
I am a 14 year old girl living here in Elmhurst.
I have been waiting to blog with you guys for ages ... well ever since Mrs. Ahlghrim told us about it.=) Anyway.... I have been living here in Elmhurst for 5 years but, before I lived here I actually lived in Buffalo, New York. I liked both of the communities I have lived in and the weather in both of my communities were nearly the same in the winter... cold and snowy and LOTS OF IT!! Although its supposed to be spring here it seems to be very much like winter! Its VERY COLD! HOWEVER i'm excited because tomorrow its supposed to be 60 degrees outside!!!!!!!! Finally a bit of spring is starting to show! How is the weather in your town? I have heard that the weather changes frequently and right now that its cold but do you guys have different seasons?
Also I was wondering can everyone in Punta Arenas speak english or is it a foreign language there? If its a foreign language your a REALLY good learner!!! Here in Elmhurst I am taking Spanish as a foreign languauge.
Some fun facts about me are that I have 3 brothers, 2 that are younger than me and 1 that is older. Also I have been dancing since I was 3 and Playing the cello since I was 9 or 10. I like playing Basketball and volleyball for fun! =P What are your hobbies? Are you almost done with college?
Thanks for chatting!
Keely R. =P
Hey Vanessa!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Lilly, like the flower but with 2 l's. Im in 8th grade, so i'm 13 years old. i live in Elmhurst which is a nice town. We have all 4 seasons (although right now our spring feels more like winter). During the winter we have about 9 hours of light, so we aren't mostly in the dark. i think it's really cool that you live at the southern-most part of the world. i think it would be very interesting to visit there.
But let me tell you more about myself. i am an only child-no brothers or sisters. i like track and ice skating but my favorite hobby would definitely have to be playing the violin. It's such an interesting instrument! I like it because it can be challengenging (i like challenges) but it's so rewarding when you finally learn the song and can play it well. I've been playing since i was in fourth grade and i have gotten the hang of it. Do you play any intruments or have any hobbies? Or do you like to sing? Please write back soon, im curioius to hear your answers.
As far as sports go, i like to play volley and badminton. Im not very good and volleyball, but i'm better at badminton. i hope to play on the badminton team in high school. i also like track, i like to run and its especially fun when you do it with your friends as a team. What kinds of sports are popular in your town?
I cant wait to hear from you!
Sincerely, Lilly
What's up Fabian!?!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Alex, but everyone calls me monty, and its cool if you do to. Im an eight grader at Churchville Middle School, and will soon be a freshman.
I think its really cool that your givin us the message to be persistant. Way to be!
But anyway life here is really different. We pretty much have the four seasons, Summer, spring, fall, and winter. We just got done with our winter. It was pretty cold, and we were usually at about 20-10 degrees. We even had some negative days. Were supposed to be in spring right now, but it is still cold. Even though our cold and your cold are much different, thats the way we think of it.
I grew up in my town of Elmhurst. I, and everyone else love it here. Theres a lot to do, and we always have our friends close by. But, I, and probably most of my other classmates dont want to stay in elmhurst forever. When I get older, I would love to see the entire world. Asia, Europe, Australia, Africa, Canada, and South America is where I would like to visit. And, I would definetly LOVE to come down to where you live. Maybe, if you still live there in 15 years, i'll come and visit haha.
But I like to fill my days with sports and friends. Aside from my studies, I love to play all types of soprts, even if Im not very good at them. My favorites are basketball and lacrosse. And I also do a lot of things with my school. I played b-ball, cross country, and I am now doing Track, which is really fun! And i love to be with my friends. I dont get to hang out with them outside of school, but I make the most of the time I have with them at my school, and when I actually get to see them. Other than that, I just chill out. But, I do play Call of Duty 4, and plan on purchasing Call of Duty 5 soon. I need to know where you play your games on. I play them on my ps3, and even though it sounds kind nerdy i love to play them, and I think that would be sweet if we could play together.
Well, i'll be waiting for your answer. And if you have a computer, it would be really cool if we could chat on aim or through e-mail. Just let me know, i'll just be waiting.
Peace,
Monty
Hey David, what's up?
ReplyDeleteMy name is Alex and I go to Churchville Middle School. I live in a town called Elmhurst, and I love it here. I'm 14 years old and in the eighth grade. In our country, men ususally shake hands and exchange some sort of greeting like "How are you?". With women its the same. Sometimes a man will kiss a women on the cheek, but that's usually only if they have previously met.
Dexter is a great show, and i've seen gossip girl, but never really watched it...
I'm actally blogging from my iPhone which I saved up to buy because both of my pernts are on the computers. Unfortunatly, I didn't realise how much the bill was going to be per month, so that wasn't a smart investment on my part :( Its alot of fun though
I have my own room (Luckily, I always have) and it's pretty big. It has a large Chicago White Sox symbol over my bed painted on the wall, because that is my favortie baseball team. I also have a TV in my room. I also have a bunch of clothes on the floor, which I was suppossed to have cleaned a week ago.
Elmhurst is a great town. I can just walk a couple of blocks and be at the center of town. There is a movie theatre and a bunch of restaurants. We have an amazing librbay here, but I would rather be at the skatepark which is about a mile farther dowm. By the skatepark, there is a pool. There is also another pool that is only about a mile from my house. Its really nice in the summertime. We also have a park nearby. It has 5 baseball diamonds. Baseball is my favorite sport, so I love it.
Do you play any sports? What kind?
What do you do for fun?
Do you have a favoirte team?
What made you want to become an English teacher?
Hope to hear from you soon,
Alex
Hey Mario!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Alex, but everyone calls me Chum as a nickname. Don't ask =).
Wow, where do I start? Well, first of all I live in Elmhurst and attend Churchville Middle School, just like everyone else here. I actually wasn't born here, I was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and moved here when I was 3. So, technically, Elmhurst isn't my hometown, but I would consider it that. I actually don't remember all that much about Boston, other than seafood. But I'm getting off topic.
Elmhurst is a great little suburb, not as quiet as the countryside, but not as bustling as the big cities like Chicago. The weather here doesn't change as much as yours, although sometimes nowadays it stays stubbornly cold.
Well, if you go to the center of town, you can find restaurants, a movie theater, and different little shops to go to. It's not as grand as New York or something, but it's a nice place to just walk around.
Elmhurst has around 46,000 people. How many people live in Punta Arenas? Anyway, as for customs I guess people shake hands when they meet, but I think a lot of places do that. If you mean customs unique to Elmhurst, then I can't really think of any...
As for myself, I am 13 years old. (one of the youngest in my class...ugh) At least my birthday comes up in a month and a half.
For hobbies of my own, I enjoy reading a lot. Ever since I was a kid, I always loved reading. I like reading fanstasy, action, and adventure books. But overall I'm pretty flexible with genres. What kind of books do you like? We have a library over here in Elmhurst, and I go there quite a lot. It's pretty nice and has a lot of books for all different ages. What's your library like?
I also like swimming, it's one of the only sports I'm actually pretty good at. =( I've been swimming since I was 7 and have been on a swim team for a couple years. I plan to join to the swim team at York High School when I become a freshman. What kind of sports do you like?
Another one of my hobbies is playing the piano. I started when I was a little kid, and played for a year and a half. Then I stopped and took it back up again a year and a half ago. So I guess you would say that I have played for 3 years altogether. Looking back on it, I wish I hadn't stopped, but what can you do. Right now some of my favorite songs to play on the piano are Fur Elise and The Entertainer. I have lessons every 2 weeks. I play almost everyday, and I plan to keep on playing for a long time. Do you play any musical instruments? If so, what kind?
I like bands like LostProphets, Three Days Grace, and Evanescence. (one of Evanescence's songs "My Immortal" is a slower piano song, I'm teaching myself how to play it.) I'm actually pretty loose with what kind of music I like. From classical to heavy metal, if I like a song, I like it, regardless of who wrote it. Don't be mistaken, though, I'm no music expert. What kind of music do people listen to in Punta Arenas? What kind of music do you like yourself?
Well, it's getting sort of late at the time of this writing, and I have school tomorrow. So I think I'm going to wrap it up with a couple of more questions. What's it like living in the southernmost city in the world? What's your family like? What do you like to do for fun? How's life in South America? Do you have any interesting, unique customs? What did you want to be when you were a little kid? What do you have a passion for, other than being an English teacher?
Tell me as much as you can!
Alex Z (Chum)

ReplyDeleteAside from me complaining about all the stuff i have to do, things in Elmhurst are amazing. We are FINALLY enjoying some nice weather this week. Sunshine and warmth! yess!! Its still pretty cold but alot warmer than what it was a couple weeks ago! I love living in Elmhurst. Anything you could possibly need is in this town. Huge schools, a new library, and the uptown. Uptown Elmhurst is where everyone hangs out. There is a movie theater, buffalo wild wings yumyum, ice cream shops, starbucks, and my 2 favorite places to go, Jamba Juice and Panera Bread. JAMBA JUICE!!! is so amazing. they sell really good smoothies. Ha Ha our english class even went there while we were on a field trip once! Our english class is crazy for jamba juice. I spend most of the money i make at panera bread. They have delicious brocoli cheddar soup, fresh warm bread, and the greatest bagels and cookies. Then of course i always wash it all down with a Dr. Pepper. My all time favorite soda!
So I have told you some of my favorite activites, Places to go, and foods, so I'm dying to know....what are yours?!?!
I can't wait to hear all about it and learn more about where you live and what kids there like to do!
ttyl rebeka!
Hello Paola!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm Caroline, an 8th grade student at Churchville Middle School. I think Elmhurst (that's the city I live in) is a great place to live. It gets very chilly here in the winter, but in the summer it can be very hot.
I like to dance, too. I take ballet once a week, which is fun and gets me out of the house.
Elmhurst is not a SUPER exciting town, but there is still plenty to do. There are lots of shops and restaurants in Downtown Elmhurst, as well as a movie theater. There are also many parks throughtout Elmhurst to hang out in, plus our great public library. So Elmhust is pretty fun.
What other stuff do you do for fun in Puntas Arenas? And what are some facts about you?
Can't wait to hear back!
-Caroline
Hey again! Nice meeting you. Is great to know you’re doing ok, though you should clean up your room (But I have a mess in my room too… my father complains about that all the time, u should all the same), Anyway, I envy you because you have an iPhone, my cell phone is like thousands of years old, I know I need to change it but I’m saving my money for some other stuff, but some day I will; I like the side kick model, though they don’t sell it here.
ReplyDeleteI’m not the kind of sporty guy, I have to admit, and I’ve never in my life been good at any sports. I sometimes play soccer with my friends, but that’s not very common in me; if I do play, I play like half of the match.
I started practicing Karate since October last year, but this year I had to leave it aside, because I had too many things to do. Actually that’s the first sport I like, so I’d love to start with it again, hopefully soon.
I’m more of a geek guy, not exactly geek, but I love reading; that’s considered part of a geek feature here, for Chilean people are not used to read a lot. I love watching movies, all kind of movies, I don’t discriminate; I specially enjoy watching avant-garde movies, the ones with long scenes with no dialogs on it. I also like German movies (Don’t know why… XD).
As I’m a geek guy, I don’t usually go clubbing, I would say like ever. I’m more of hanging out with friends in a house, eating pizza, watching a good movie just talking, sometimes reading a good book, or writing. (I do some writing, sometimes in English, some others in Spanish).
Why did I want to become an English teacher…? Where do I begin? I think it was in middle school I got excellent grades there; but I guess I was totally sure when I was in my senior year at high school. English here is not a big deal; people don’t speak it at all, and students are not motivated when it comes to English classes, and my main reason was to change that a bit. I hope when I become a teacher I can contribute with that transformation that most of my classmates and I want to happen in our Chilean classrooms (Now I sounded like a politician… lol).
Do you like watching movies?
Do you know any other language? (Spanish maybe)
Do you read a lot?
Have you ever been to other country?
Hope to hear from you real soon.
Take care.
David
Hi guys, Nice to meet you, I did not receive an specific answer but I am going to converse with you as a whole group. I would like to know what your expectations for the future are, if you have clear what you want to study now or you will see through the way. Because it is very important to discover what we love in life, thus, we go straight to the point and we do not get lost.
ReplyDeleteI was able to appreciate that we have things in common like the weather that also affects the way people are, but for what I have seen our ways of life are completely different. For example we love to cook and do the lunch that would be like dinner there I mean the main food. Every family joins at lunch to eat and then return to school or work and we eat like four times a day incredible!!! plus the snacking.
Our city is also very touristic many people come from other parts of the world to see this nature because we have many mountains, and rivers, glaciers and nature that is still virgin. I can go to many parts and it will take only a couple of hours.
And as it is very cold people try to look for other things in which to have fun for example there are a lot of musicians in this city, you pick a stone up and you will find a guitar player or bass player, they are everywhere, I am one of those ;)
Another thing that can call your attention is that we have a main street in which you can find all the shopping centers or stores that, therefore the people tend to walk around this street as a way of strolling, many high school students and people do this in the afternoon from one side to the other over and over again, I do it too.
And last thing I wanted to tell you is that we have too much slang and many idioms that even if you know how to speak Spanish you would not understand us anything :) because it is a lot distorted, of course in formal situations it changes enormously. Many people come here and get shocked because what they have studied seems not be very practical. That is why if you want to learn a language it is also much better to live in the place to see reality.
I hope it has been entertaining and useful.
Bye Miguel !!!:)
Hi caroline!!!!
ReplyDeletenice to meet you, Elmhurst sounds to be a bit more interesting than Punta arenas, because here we don't have many places and stuffs for doing but it also depends on people, for example I personally enjoy too much living here and I do different things, one of them as I told you before is dance, I also take it once a week, apart from that I also enjoy watching movies different but my favourite movies are Ghost, Grace and Saw but here we only have one cinema so for that reason most of the time I rent the movies. I like too going shopping and going out for dinner with my boyfriend.
I have one sister and one brother, they are younger than me, my sister has 21 years and my brother 15 years old, do you have any brother or sister??, I also have a pet called Terry is a white dog.
Do you have pets???
Last year I was living in another country called uruguay, it is also located in South america, this country is littler than Chile, I live in Montevideo that is the capital of that country.Have you ever been living in other country??
well caroline i hope to continue knowing about you and your life...
kisses for you

Hello everyone!
ReplyDeleteMy name is Paula and I am twenty one years old, also a student of English Pedagogy.
What can I say about me?...well, This is my 4th year at university, but my career is going to last a bit more as I am going to have a baby very soon, nevertheless I hope to finish this semester and come back next year.

I really enjoy sharing some time with my friends, listen to some music and watch tv, but I don`t like spend too much time doing the last one.
I can tell you that it`s raining right now, the weather here in Punta Arenas is not predictable at all, becuase in the morning it was sunny...I would like to know if in Elmhurst happens the same, but I think that we are very used to it, so if you are thinking in visiting our city don`t forget to bring a pair of gloves, scarf, and a good jacket..just in case =).
I would also like to know what is your typical schedule, or what do you usually do in your free time, and the most important thing how are your classes, which activities you do, etc.

For one of our english projects, we had to read a memoir and i actually read marley and me! What a coincidence? I actually read it before i knew the movie came out so that was really cool to see it on the big screen! What part are you at? Is is such a great book!!! The movie was pretty good but i thought the book was wayyyy better!!
What kind of chorus were you in in highschool? i'm not in chorus now buti really like to sing! Me and my friend rebeka (who's also in this class) are performing a song for the variety show here at our school. Are you an alto or a saprano?

ReplyDeleteHey, I am quite impressed, I never thought I was going to have a such a complete answer.. It`s great.. Believe it or not Im listening the song you told to listen.. It must be a wonderful experience to play the piano. I`ve been playing guitar for a month.. Im improving but I`m not that good yet, but I know I will.
Ì`m listening the song you told me, It seems is a love song "a girl like u is impossible to find" is that the main theme of the song???
Currently, I`ve been preparing my plans for my performances at school. As you know I`m sutduying for becoming a teacher of English and now I`m teaching students from 8th grade.
Landscapes here are wonderful. We love to go camping on vacations , when weather is better. In winter we have the posibility to go skiing. I would like to try an sturbucks. I have never tried one, I hope I will one day.

Hi Lainie!!
ReplyDeleteSorry by the late...
I would recommend Punta Arenas for holidays, because here you can go to other parts which are very beatiful, for example Torres del Paine park. This is a well known park, people like going there because it has many awsame lakes, some of them are green, other deep blue, and the Torres which are very particular montains look wonderful behind all those marvelous nature.
In summer is not that cold, you could find hot days, but here the weather is very unsettled so maybe one day is terribly sunny and next day it's raining cats and dogs :P
It's good to know you like Spanish, of course bacuase is my language, I think it must be very difficult to learn, it has many different words for separate actions, person, place, time, etc. But it is fun though, I hope you will learn a lot.
OK, I'm glad to read your answer and I hope we'll make contact soon.
BYE :)
